We Love Local: Our Favorite Sweet Treats—Austin, Texas Edition
As you’ve probably noticed by now if you’ve read our recent tributes to our favorite sweet treat spots in SATX and PDX, we’re all about celebrating local flavors, and Austin is bursting with creative spots we want to share! Today I want to share some of our favorite sweet treat spots that you won’t want to miss if you’re local to Austin or if you’re just visiting the capital city.
1. Zed’s Ice Cream
First up is Zed’s Ice Cream! If you remember our Portland sweet list, this place is not unlike Nico’s. They offer New Zealand-style ice cream, which means you get real fruit mixed in right on the spot, topped with all sorts of delicious goodies. It’s the perfect treat for cooling down on a hot Austin day!

Now, let me let you in on a little secret: Thoroughbread has THE best cookies we’ve ever had! Nestled in the Zilker park area, they might be known as a neighborhood bakery, but their cookies steal the show. We’re talking about the biggest, softest, most incredible cookies you can imagine! They’re only open from 8 AM to 2 PM every day, so plan your visit accordingly—it’s totally worth it!
3. OMG Squee
Next up is OMG Squee, a super fun spot that’s as cute and colorful as its name suggests. OMG Squee is super popular (and instagramable) and for good reason. Founded by Sarah Lim, this East Austin gem serves up cutie mochi donuts and macaroons.
4. Lick Honest Ice Cream
No sweet treat list in Austin would be complete without mentioning Lick Ice Cream. This longstanding favorite has expanded beyond Austin, with locations in San Antonio (and beyond). It was one of the first places our founders fell in love with when they moved to Austin in 2014, and it remains a go-to ice cream spot for us to this day. Their unique flavors and creamy texture are simply unbeatable!
5. Shaved Ice Island

Finally, don’t sleep on this unassuming food truck at the parking lot of a bowling alley in South Austin—Shaved Ice Island. They serve up some of the best snoballs (aka snow cones) we’ve ever had! They add ice cream, condensed milk, and a variety of delicious toppings that elevate the whole experience. Trust me, it’s worth the trip to the corner of William Cannon and West Gate!
